6 Great One-Tank Trips for Fall Colors
Where to See Fall Colors Old Saybrook, CT
In Old Saybrook, we’re in one of the best spots in the United States for autumn colors. Not only do the trees in the community turn bright, beautiful colors as winter approaches, but we’re close to some of the best spots in the United States to see the changing of leaves.
Travel blog, Travel + Leisure has compiled a big list of the best cities in the United States with optimal fall colors viewing. Lined with trees, these locations light up with the oranges, reds, and yellows of autumn. Many of them feature hills and mountains that allow for 3-dimensional viewing of the colorful flora.
We’ve taken that list and found the cities we’re able to travel to from Old Saybrook with only a single tank of gas (in most cars). Some of the locations may require a fill-up before heading back, but considering the beauty, it’s unlikely you’ll mind spending a few more minutes there.
They’re organized from the closest to the farthest from Old Saybrook
1. Salem, Massachusetts (145 Miles)
I-395 offers a relatively-scenic northward drive that scrapes a couple of beautiful landmarks like the Pachaug State Forest and Memorial Beach on Lake Chaubunagungamaug. At only 145 miles, it’s proximity gives you some wiggle room to stop at these beautiful waysides, and you’ll probably be able to go there and back on a single fill-up!
2. Portsmouth, New Hampshire (173 Miles)
Continue north on I-395 and you’ll find this quaint autumn destination. Portsmouth is a port city full of trees that glow with warm fall energy. Peak colors hit the end of September so it’s the perfect time to plan a road trip. Again, with good fuel-efficiency, this trip should be no problem there and back again with a single tank.
3. Ludlow, Vermont (175 Miles)
Heading north on I-91 is another beautiful northward drive that reaches Ludlow about 3 hours out and just past Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forest (another beautiful wayside to stop). Ludlow is a small community in the hills with the popular Okemo ski mountain, so if you find things to do/see/eat during the fall, you may want to come back in a few months and enjoy some beautiful New England skiing.
4. Stowe, Vermont (260 Miles)
A longer drive isn’t a problem when it means more beauty to take in. Such is the case with the drive upstate Vermont to Stowe, a rustic community known for its outdoor activities and beautiful fall colors on Mount Mansfield.
5. Cape May, New Jersey (267 Miles)
At nearly four hours, the drive to Cape May, NJ is long, but punctuated with beautiful outdoors like the Bass River State Forest through which US-9 passes. Cape May’s quaint seaside community, tree-lined streets and abundance of cafes and bed and breakfasts make it the perfect weekend getaway.
6. Lake Placid, New York (289 Miles)
I’m sure we don’t need to tell you about the beauty of upstate, New York, but here we go. While Lake Placid is the farthest single-tank drive on this fall colors list, it’s probably one of the more highly recommended. Be ready for a drive, as you’ll find time in your car over four and a half hours. We’d be willing to bet it doesn’t feel that long, however, with so many beautiful trees and colors along the northward journey and a beautiful community at the terminus that seems to have been built for autumn’s pastoral charms.
